Valediction

I was just rummaging through my papers at home, finding more stuff to recycle, and then i saw this. Well, i think it would be familiar to all those under Miss Sie for English, but since majority of you shouldnt be, here goes:

I don't know about you, but my idea of a graduation was one outdoors where the sun shines and the soft breeze blows. And the ceremony would end with mortar-boards filling the skies. But since it's evening, and dawn for all the insects, I guess we’ll settle for air-conditioning and comfortable seats.

Family and friends, we are gathered here today to end a chapter of 203 individual paperback novels. This particular chapter of our lives spans a period of 10 years for some, 4 years for others.

Lightweight and compact, it serves as a reference material for our later lives. This chapter contains phone numbers of friends, memories of true friendship; the anguish and frustrations of growing up, failures and bad grades; the happy times we smashed birthday cake into each others faces; the times we played ‘zero-point’ on the front porch after school; the art of mimicking teachers; the location of the best ‘mee pok’ stall in Singapore, and the meaning of being a person.

Such a valuable book, you say, and the publishers didn’t bind it in leather with gold trim? No, this book is not to be treated like a set of Brittanica Encyclopedia, this book is not for display; it is to be read to shreds, doggy-eared, underlined, high-lighted, commented on, carried around, soaked in the rain, quoted from like an O’level literature text. The only thing that we cannot do to it is rewrite it.

No other book, I guarantee, will teach us to be frank and laugh at ourselves. Which street directory will give you the exact locations of the ‘red bricks’, ‘stone tables’ or ‘yellow railings’—where one is likely to find a SC girl doing last minute homework as she is to hear the latest local gossip. This sacred book will tease your imagination into remembering the horrors of handing in late-work, and og course instruct you, step-by-step, on fool-proof methods to getting out of trouble.

SCGS is a microcosm of the real world. It is the training ground of a privileged few who are brought together by fate and welded into one soul by the SC spirit.

There is no secret to success. SC’s success is due to Sincerity, Courage, Generosity and Service. No one person is responsible for the growth and cultivation of an SCGS ‘Kim Gek’. Many thanks must be given to the people who made the buds blossom.

Thank you teachers for rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty in the process of sculpting us. Thank you for paying attention to the details we always leave out. Thank you for instilling that we not only know how to buy a drink from the vending machine, but also learn how a vending machine works, so that we can get a drink even without money. Most of all, thank you for caring enough to scream, yell and shout at us; we know it’s your indirect way of saying you love us very much, but you honestly shouldn’t feel shy about saying how you really feel.

We must not, of course forget our non-teaching staff. The office-staff who print all our much-dreaded exam and test papers, and also hide them with so much skill that we can’t put fire to them. The cleaning ladies who keep our school cleaner than our bedrooms despite the fact that we spend more time in school than our bedrooms. To the gardener who keeps the school’s padi-field’ neat, tidy and free of dog turd. And not forgetting to mention the canteen stall- holders who make school food with breaking our day-old crash diets. Thank you, all of you.

As you can see, everyone in SCGS is involved in polishing the jewels that leave Emerald Hill. From the school cat, to the always underfoot primary school girls, to the teachers, to the non-teaching staff, to the sexually curious secondary school girls, to the principal. Should one fail to do his or her part, the whole structure will crumble – this interdependency is what makes the SC spirit so undivided, a single unit, a family.

Today, 203 young ladies will be unleashed into the world they have been prepared for. Although each is an individual who will follow her heart and pursue her own goals and ambitions, they all share a common spirit, the SC spirit, which will always be a part of them where ever they go – for now and forever.

Caroline Lee
Sec 4/1
29th September 1993

Well, it seems so different from the last time I read it. Then, we were sitting in our wonderful 4 gy classroom, complaining that we had to write some silly testimonial, but now after graduating, and changing the tense from being 'in SCGS' to being 'from SCGS', this valediction seems so much more genuine and true. though it was meant for the graduation sec 4 batch of 1993, these emotions are certainly not to fade with time. After the loss of our wonderful Mee Pok man a few weeks ago, dear do we miss that mee pok. My order would be : "Hi uncle!! err kuai ban kway teow gan ($1.50 dry), bu yao la jiao (no chilli) , jia duo dian chu (add more vinegar), hai you jia san mao rou!(and also add 30 cents worth of meat)". Thank you uncle for totally being able to understand my almost incomprehensible chinese. Sometimes we do have to no longer possess something before we feel the pain of losing it. Well, Ms Caroline Lee ( not sure of her status now) has mentioned, some girls have spent 10 years and some 4 years in SC.

For me, it would have to be only 4 years, but my SC life has and will certainly neither be --lightweight, nor compact.

Choices

Choices- the main issue we struggle with in our everyday life. As for me - tomorrow night? or how about the 30th? or the 1st maybe? oh wait, maybe dinner like now?

Well, people always complain when they are given no choice at all, but isn't having one too many choices even worse?

meiyi (s)

Hello again, im kind of disturbed that there are so many meiyi's even in a little small dot like Singapore. Especially for someone called melvin aka maoshi, 'meiyi' doesnt sound too good, does it? Well, actually the biggest disturbance to my inner equilibrium was when i attempted to get my password and username from blogger, and they started giving me a whole list of possible usernames they have in their database, variations of 'meiyi' : meiyimeiyimeiyi, mei-yi, mei23 etc. see that? mei 23? this person even shares the same favourite number as me! man! im totally insignificant. thats why, i had to blast meiyifong as my blog title. you over there, geddit? im meiyifong! im not just another meiyi you see walking down the street. ok??

The much awaited night

Prom is a term technically only for the celebration involving the graduating J2 batch where both sexes- male and female, (and maybe other combinations) are involved. =D therefore, the wonderful event held at Regent hotel on the 23rd of November 2006 should actually just be called a Graduation Night, and not prom! but whatever it is, it was truly a wonderful time for me and i thank thank thank the exco for all their hard work! while the rest of us were slogging over Os, dear babes had prom at the back of their heads- hoping to plan the most wonderful night for all us SC kim-geks. to my dear Cam, Jean, Lishan, Val, Stef,Shong, Bev your efforts were definitely not wasted!

on my part, the dinner meant so much more to me than just dressing up and getting manicures and fake lashes and whatever not. just throughout that splendid day, i learnt loads about many other things. Well, i did my hair and make up at Jean Yip at plaza sing, and boy was it memorable. plucking eyebrows is such a painful ordeal- torturous! other than that, me and mum were rushing around like mad, buying and trying on stuff, basically exemplifying the result of my bad habit: procrastination and "leaving things to the last minute"-indeed.

finally, I reached Regent, half an hour later than the supposed meeting time, and starting taking many pictures with Lesley and company! Many said they couldnt really tell that it was me but the responses were varied, so oh well. haha what amused me was that nearly everyone could tell my eyelashes were fake! Nooo!

At our table sat zara, rekha, cheryl, amanda, ying, jill, jean, chiawen, koon and I. it was enjoyable esp with reks opposite constantly trying to grab my attention (ahha!). the food was good and i think i ate the most! man, its always me! haha i love food! isnt it great to be able to eat?! Giants must Fall should deserve to be applauded larh for their enthusiasm and willingness to perform for a bunch of 16 year olds. I especially loved the 'chasing cars' version which was obviously made popular by MY idol Jonathan Leong! haha of course i was talking and laughing as much as i was eating and therefore the meal ended much faster than i thought it would. while the other classes went on stage to take pictures, 4gy decided to be fresh once again and took the spiral staircase outside. yayness.after taking more and more photos,

my wonderful class partner Alyssa a.k.a my very own 'koomama' and I! aah! my wonderful becky!! haah thanks for all the things you've for me! ultra-thankful! mmm!
camille!! hope we both get into vj next year! haha then i dont have to say goodbye to you dearest little piece of thing right now!=D
my wonderful lumsai! aah! what would i do without you??
jeansies and I!!

QIANN??!!!
chia wen (!!) miss tan and I!

chimmy and I! haha you should have turned around jill!

chiawen jean and i finally came to a conclusion that we were indeed gonna crash ll's house and spread the joy to her - the anti-prommer. haha but we walked down the streets of orchard to view the lighting and we came to yet another conclusion that it was super overdone. i mean the lights were like nice but too many and too thick, it seems like a carpet or something haha. we finally decided to stop walking in our dresses and (chia wen's heels) and cabbed all the way to Tai Hwan Crescent. Yes, ll's house.

haha at ll's house, we watched disc 2 of drumline, disc 1's content being verbally told by me since it was stuck in my dvd player at home! watched band of brothers, then camped at her rooftop. haha chia wen went to sleep while the 3 of us played..MONOPOLY! hahaha it was funn reliving our younger days! anyway yea till like 6 then we flew miniature kites! haha ll's house is just full of entertainment! yea after chia wen woke up we walked to serangoon gardens to eat breakfast! yum! and my whole plate of apple crumbs flew onto chiawen when the fan blew at her direction! haha! after we returned back to ll's house we just talked for 3 hours while jean took frequent doses of sleep. the rain was super heavy and we all had to wait till like 1 then we could leave. man i felt ultra weird on the bus still with my prom hair and all haha but it comes to a time when i dont really care too much about what others think of me (maybe to a certain extent la) so i was still all cheery on the bus.

Chia Wen sleeping!

Us watching and (dying)
back home i had a fun time dismantling my hair and had a few shampooing sessions and a bath then rushed out to plaza sing again for an hour and a half's organ lesson. yess music lessons are cool because every week i seem to see someone new in my class! its quite weird but im not sure how yamaha's planning goes. after that took a bus to crown centre to meet jill. ON THE BUS: i met adeline and angeline ( ex-sc bandits who are currently in ac ) and one more person now j1 in ac i think- i didnt manage to get his name but sounded quite disappointed when i said nearly no one was going for ac's tune in the next day. haha. met wenhui also who sweetly showed me this year band camp's booklet but soon after i had to rush down the bus. talking about that sometimes some people on the bus really amuse me. they sit on the outer seat of the bus column and when the person sitting inside (me) tries to excuse herself so that she and her big bag can come out, they know the magnitude of this whole thing trying to get past them but they only move like an inch to their left.?? haha so i just like squeezed my way through, not sure if my big bag grazed him/ her or something, i didnt have the time to turn around to apologise because by the time i squeezed out and ran down the bus i think Mr. Bus driver was too impatient and drove off immediately.sorry mr/ms if my bag grazed any part of you!=D

after meeting jill, we headed to adam food centre to meet chiawen and koon then headed off to her church -Gospel Light. it was a warm place and the food was good. it was even more amusing meeting Robindro Chatterji- the pro sji lit presenter at our symposium this year. well after that, koon and i had an eventful time figuring out the 9- card game some of the church senior's were putting up. Man sometimes i think i really think too much. Chiawen's church was nice and for awhile i suddenly thought of this : "Be still and know that I am God" -Psalms 46:10. Indeed, amidst all this hustle and bustle and dance and fun, it is indeed rewarding to our souls to thank Him above for even giving us the opportunity to enjoy this. Indeed, all in God's grace.

Till then i hadnt slept since the morning of prom! and the surprising thing was i wasnt even tired! another late night and by the time i reached home i conked out almost immediately! yayness!

electrified

hello everyone!!! you cant imagine how excited I am now!! oh my! haha i FINALLY remembered my username and password so i can now enter blogger to blog!! HEH i think its really cool when you totally forget something, and like maybe 2 days later you remember it so clearly its like you never forgot it at all. haha wish that could have happened on the day of our history paper man! Anyway, this post is going to be short because i want to see how it looks on the front page first. HAHA. Miss ANDRENALINE is totally pumping man!By the way, as so many of you have commented, the previous blog is so lorrainish because it was indeed her brainchild. haha thankyou lorraine for helping me put this together, along with the backup of my other slaves chiawen and jean! of course, pau was indispensable too! thanks!
